It sounds like you might have some of the PLA burning up in the nozzle and/or on the surface of the nozzle. This can sometimes be caused by over extrusion or impurities in the material burning up.

I have seen this a lot in Zortrax Z-ABS when using the colors Yellow, White, Blue, and Green. If I remember correctly it was just the color filler burning up at the temps they had set but this was a specific thing to Zortrax and their material.

What PLA are you running and how hot are we running on it?

First off, version 1.6 is very old. The latest version is 1.7.5. I would recommend updating. This may help with the bumps you are seeing.

Stringing can be minimized by dialing in your retraction settings. Here is our article on how to do that.

I’m a service engineer. Problems like this are common for me. And sorry for you to hear a clear „No“ on my behalf - there is no common or usual way to get a machine up and running. I went over 20 iterations or more, which is normal for custom made machines.

I tried different temperatures, speeds and layer thicknesses. No luck. I noticed that the messiness starts at a spot where the z distance varies and I think that might have to do with a "flat tire" on one of my Rostock Max V2 cheapskates. I think I tightened it too much and one of the bearing sleeves got "sticky". I loosened the tension and the stickiness went away. I am now trying to see, if the prints in that area will get smoother.
