Although this may be a bit late, I had a similar issue with a failure to connect. The issue was Baud rate.

@unlimitedbacon thanks, actually it looks better, now it is much more responsive. I will try some print soon as soon and post the results!

Does the printer show up under the Mac System Report? Can you confirm that you're able to connect using another similar program like Cura or the Arduino IDE?

250000 is the standard baud rate; /dev/tty.usbserial-<name> sounds right.

On Arch based distros make sure you have installed mattercontrol-plugins as well. This has the closed source plugins including the S3G driver for Flashforge printers. Also make sure you have given your user permissions for the serial port. See the wiki article on running on Linux.
