Direct drive E3D conversion for makerbot 2?

Hello, my makerbot 2 has been plagued with random extrusion problems for months, even after swapping the whole hotend, and its sitting useless right now. I'd like to just completely swap to an E3D system, but I think I can keep my stepper motor. Is there a way I can fit a direct drive system into the makerbot rep 2?

We have a guide for doing the E3D upgrade, but this is for a bowden setup, not direct feed.
If you really want to go direct, you should consider the Titan Aero extruder.
