I can't get a good squished first layer, it looks like the filament is being dropped on the plate, I messed with the Z offset in MatterControl but it didn't help any, I went so fat as -10mm but there's still a big gap between the nozzle and the plate, so yea, any help would be great, I tried switching to Slic3r but that made no change.

Z offset problem
RE: Linux Issues
I can't offer any solid advice, but in passing I seen a comment on a forum saying it is an issue with mono that causes MC to close out spontaneously, your problem was happening to me but I just went back to windows. At least MC "worked" a bit, I couldn't get cura or RH to connecct to my printer at all, I'm too new at Linux to try and fix these kinds of problems, hope this helps or gets you pointed in the right direction.
Just adding that yes I added myself to the right groups, tty? and another one, forget where I read that, just sayin so that you might be able to go from here.
z offset sugestions
I think my z offset needs to be changed, it's at zero and seems to just drop the filament on the bed, it looks awful close but its not leaving a flat line, anyhow, where abouts should I start? do I use negative in that setting? like say -.5mm? would that be a good attempt?
